Desktop icons disappeared on your Mac? Where they went and how to get them back

Where did my desktop icons go?

First check the files are safe: open Finder and click Desktop in the sidebar, or press ⌘ ⇧ D in Finder. If they are listed there, nothing is lost, and one of the settings below is hiding them from the desktop itself.

Why are my desktop icons not showing?

1. Show items is off. System Settings, Desktop & Dock, next to Show items, tick On Desktop.
2. You clicked the wallpaper. With Click wallpaper to show desktop set to Always, a click on the wallpaper sweeps windows aside; with Stage Manager, icons can hide until you click the wallpaper. Set it to Only in Stage Manager to stop surprises.
3. Stacks are on. Files are grouped into stacks by kind. Right click the desktop and untick Use Stacks, or press ⌃ ⌘ 0.
4. The desktop was turned off with Terminal. Run defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop true; killall Finder.
5. iCloud moved them. With Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive turned on, your desktop files live in iCloud Drive, and turning it off leaves them there. Look in Finder, iCloud Drive, Desktop.

How do I get my files back on the desktop?

Fix the setting that hid them, from the list above. If the files are in iCloud Drive's Desktop folder after you turned the feature off, drag them back into the Desktop folder in your home folder.

What if the files are not in the Desktop folder at all?

Search for one by name with Spotlight, ⌘ Space. If it is gone everywhere, check the Trash, then a Time Machine backup.

Checked on 16 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1, by reading its settings and the labels in System Settings. Nothing was changed.
