The best window managers for Mac, by how you work
Snapping, grid tiling, scrolling or Stage Manager: which kind of Mac window manager fits how you work, and the well known options in each group.
"Best" depends on how you use windows. So this sorts the options by the kind of help they give, not by a score.
You want two windows side by side, now and then
Use what macOS already has. On macOS 15 or later, drag a window to a screen edge or use Window > Move & Resize. See how to tile windows on a Mac.
You want shortcuts to snap any window into a slot
- Rectangle is free and open source. Keyboard shortcuts and drag to edge snap areas for halves, thirds, quarters and more.
- Magnet is a paid app from the Mac App Store that does the same job with drag to edge areas and shortcuts.
Both move one window when you ask. They do not arrange new windows for you.
You want every window tiled automatically in a grid
- Amethyst is free and tiles automatically with a choice of layouts.
- yabai is free and tiles with a binary split layout, driven from the command line and a config file. Some of its features ask you to partly turn off System Integrity Protection.
- AeroSpace is free, tiles in the style of i3, and uses its own workspaces in place of macOS Spaces. Set up with a config file.
You want windows that never shrink
ClutterFreeMac is a scrolling window manager: every window gets a column on a strip that scrolls, so opening more apps never squeezes the rest. Native app, settings in a window, no security changes. See it working.
You want fewer windows in view, not arranged
Stage Manager, built into macOS since Ventura, keeps one group of windows in the middle and parks the rest as thumbnails on the left. Turn it on in Control Centre.
