How to remove extra desktops on a Mac, and stop new ones appearing

Delete the desktops you do not use in Mission Control, stop full screen apps adding more, and turn off the swipes that send you to them by accident.

Guide · Updated 16 October 2026

How do I remove a desktop on my Mac?

Open Mission Control with ⌃ ↑ or a four finger swipe up. Hover over the desktop in the row along the top, and click the X that appears. Its windows move to the desktop next to it; nothing closes.

Can I turn off multiple desktops completely?

No. macOS always keeps at least one desktop, and has no switch to turn Spaces off. With one desktop left and no full screen apps, there is nothing else to switch to, which is the same in practice.

Why does my Mac keep adding desktops?

Every full screen app, and every Split View pair, becomes its own space in the row. Leave full screen with ⌃ ⌘ F and the space goes. Use Fill from the green button instead, for a window as big as the screen that stays on your desktop.

How do I stop swiping to another desktop by accident?

Change or turn off Swipe between full-screen applications in System Settings, Trackpad, More Gestures. See turning off the swipe between desktops.

Room for every window on one desktop

ClutterFreeMac gives one desktop the room of several: windows sit side by side on a strip that runs past the screen's edges, so you scroll to a window instead of switching to another desktop. More on Spaces and a strip together.

Checked on 16 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1, by reading its settings and the labels in System Settings. Nothing was changed.
