The Downloads stack next to the Trash is gone. How to drag it back, make it show a folder icon or a stack, and sort it so the newest file is first.

Guide · Updated 22 October 2026

How do I put Downloads back in the Dock?

  1. In Finder, press ⇧ ⌘ H to open your home folder.
  2. Drag the Downloads folder to the right side of the Dock, past the divider line, next to the Trash.
  3. Let go when the other icons move aside.

Folders can only go on the right of the divider. The left side is for apps.

How do I change how the Downloads stack looks?

Right click it in the Dock:

  • Sort by: choose Date Added to keep the newest download on top.
  • Display as: Stack shows the newest file's icon; Folder shows a plain folder icon.
  • View content as: Fan for a quick arc, Grid for many files, List for long names.

Why did it disappear?

It was most likely dragged off by accident, which removes the shortcut only. Your Downloads folder and its files are still in your home folder. To stop it happening again, lock the Dock.

Make Finder open there too: change the default Finder folder. More on the Dock: add apps to the Dock.

Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1: Sort by, Date Added, Display as, View content as, Fan, Grid and List were read from the Dock's own menus.
