"No Available Windows" on a Mac: what it means and how to find the window

The Dock or App Exposé says No Available Windows while the app is open. Where the window really is, and how to bring it back in each case.

Guide · Updated 16 October 2026

What does No Available Windows mean on a Mac?

The app is open but has no window you can see here. Mac apps can stay open with every window closed, so this is normal for an app whose last window you closed. It also appears when the window exists somewhere else.

How do I get the window back?

  1. Open a new one. With the app in front, press ⌘ N, or choose File, New Window.
  2. Check other desktops. The window may be on another desktop or in full screen. Open Mission Control with ⌃ ↑ and look along the top row.
  3. Check for a minimized window. Look on the right of the Dock, or open the app's Window menu.
  4. Check for an off screen window. After unplugging a monitor a window can sit outside the screen. See window off screen.
  5. Quit and reopen the app with ⌘ Q.

Why does split screen say No Available Windows?

Split View needs a second window that can be tiled on the same desktop. Open the second app's window first, on the same desktop, then tile the two.
