Why an app in the Dock shows a question mark, and how to fix it

A grey question mark in the Dock means the app it pointed to is gone or moved. How to remove it, point it at the app again, or reinstall what was deleted.

What does a question mark in the Dock mean?

The Dock keeps a shortcut to each app. A question mark means the app is no longer where the shortcut points. Usually it was deleted, moved out of the Applications folder, renamed, or it was on an external drive that is not connected.

How do I fix it?

  1. Drag the question mark up and out of the Dock until Remove appears, then let go. Or right click it and choose Options, Remove from Dock.
  2. Open Applications in Finder (⇧ ⌘ A) and see whether the app is still there.
  3. If it is, drag it back into the Dock. If not, reinstall it from the App Store or the maker's website.

Why did it happen after an update?

Some apps replace themselves with a new copy under a slightly different name, or move into a folder, when they update. The old shortcut then points nowhere. Adding the new copy to the Dock fixes it.

What if the app lives on an external drive?

Connect the drive, and the icon comes back by itself. Apps you use every day are better kept in Applications on the Mac itself.

Rebuild the Dock: add apps to the Dock, or start over with a Dock reset.
