How to make Safari full screen on a Mac, with or without the toolbar
Put Safari in full screen, choose whether the tabs and address bar stay, make it fill the screen without full screen, and get back out.
How do I make Safari full screen on a Mac?
Press ⌃ ⌘ F, or click the green button at the top left of the window, or choose View, Enter Full Screen. Press the shortcut again to leave.
How do I hide the address bar in Safari full screen?
In full screen, open the View menu (move the pointer to the top to see it) and untick Always Show Toolbar in Full Screen. The tabs and address bar then hide until you move the pointer to the top edge. Tick it to keep them on screen.
How do I make Safari fill the screen without full screen?
Hold the pointer over the green button and choose Fill, or drag the window up to the menu bar. Safari covers the screen but stays on your desktop with the menu bar and Dock, so switching apps is one click. See maximizing a window.
How do I make a video full screen in Safari?
Use the player's own full screen button, or double click the video. That fills the screen with the video alone; Escape leaves it. For a floating video over other windows instead, see picture in picture.
How do I get Safari back to normal size?
Press ⌃ ⌘ F to leave full screen. If the window is still too big, hold the pointer over the green button and choose Return to Previous Size, or drag a corner.
Every way out of full screen, in any app: the full screen shortcut.
Checked on 16 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1, by reading its settings and the labels in System Settings. Nothing was changed.
