How do I give a Shortcut a keyboard shortcut?

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and double click your shortcut.
  2. Open its details with the info button in the sidebar on the right.
  3. Click the button to add a keyboard shortcut, and press the keys.
  4. Close the editor. The keys work in every app.

Which keys should I use?

Use three modifiers and a letter, such as ⌃ ⌥ ⌘ and a letter. Apps rarely use those, so they will not clash. Avoid ⌘ with a single letter: most are already taken by Copy, Save, Quit and the rest.

Why does my Shortcut key do nothing?

  • Another app or system shortcut uses the same keys. Pick a different set.
  • The Shortcut asks for input, such as selected files, and gets none from the front app.
  • The Shortcut needs a permission it has not been given yet. Run it once from the Shortcuts app to approve it.

Which Shortcuts are worth a key?

  • Open the set of apps you use for one task, all at once.
  • Resize the front window to an exact size. See set an exact window size.
  • Turn a Focus on and close distracting apps in one go.

Open apps by key the same way: open an app with a keyboard shortcut. Layouts for a whole task: automate window layouts.
