Stage Manager not working on your Mac? What to check
Stage Manager is greyed out, will not turn on, or hides your windows. The setting it depends on, the log out it needs, and why some windows never join it.
Why is Stage Manager greyed out?
Stage Manager requires Displays have separate Spaces to be on. System Settings says so in its own words. To fix it:
- Open System Settings, Desktop & Dock.
- Under Mission Control, turn on Displays have separate Spaces.
- Log out and back in. This setting only takes effect after a log out.
- Turn on Stage Manager.
Built in window tiling needs the same setting, so turning it on helps both.
Why are my recent apps not showing on the left?
- Show recent apps in Stage Manager is off. Turn it on in Desktop & Dock.
- A window is covering the strip. Make the centre window narrower and the thumbnails come back.
- The app is in full screen. Full screen apps get their own Space and never appear in Stage Manager.
How do I turn Stage Manager on and off quickly?
From Control Centre in the menu bar, or with a shortcut: Keyboard Shortcuts has Turn Stage Manager on/off, with no key set by default.
Why do windows disappear when I click the desktop?
In Stage Manager, clicking the wallpaper moves every window aside so you can reach the desktop. Set Click wallpaper to show desktop to Only in Stage Manager or turn it off.

Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1: the requirement text, Requires log out, Show recent apps in Stage Manager and Turn Stage Manager on/off were read from System Settings.
