chunkwm is gone: what replaced it
chunkwm, the tiling window manager for Mac, was discontinued and succeeded by yabai. What changed, and other options including a scrolling layout.
chunkwm was a free tiling window manager for macOS. Its author discontinued it and wrote yabai as its successor, which is where most chunkwm users went.
Options today
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| yabai | chunkwm's successor; binary space partition tiling; some features need System Integrity Protection partly off |
| AeroSpace | Tiling with its own workspaces, no security changes needed |
| Amethyst | Automatic layouts, easier to start |
| ClutterFreeMac | Scrolling instead of tiling; no security changes, no config file |
If what you liked about chunkwm was never touching the mouse, ClutterFreeMac keeps that: every move has a ⌃ ⌥ shortcut, with H J K L as an option. See ClutterFreeMac vs yabai.
