Spectacle is discontinued: what to use instead
Spectacle, the free window shortcut app, is no longer developed. Its natural successor, the built in tiling in macOS, and a scrolling option.
Spectacle was a free, open source Mac app for moving windows to halves, thirds and corners with shortcuts. It is no longer developed; its project page recommends moving on.
Where Spectacle users go
| Option | Why |
|---|---|
| Rectangle | Free and open source, built on Spectacle's ideas, with similar shortcuts |
| macOS Sequoia tiling | Halves and quarters built in, with Fn ⌃ and the arrows |
| ClutterFreeMac | A different model: every window on a scrolling strip, arranged for you |
Same keys, different idea
If you liked Spectacle because your hands never left the keyboard, ClutterFreeMac keeps that: ⌃ ⌥ and the arrows move along the strip, ⌃ ⌥ ⇧ and the arrows move a window, ⌃ ⌥ R cycles its width. The difference is that every window has a place without you sending it there.
Questions
Is Spectacle still available for Mac?
Its last release can still be found, but it is no longer developed or updated. Rectangle is the usual replacement.
