How to reset window positions on a Mac
Windows stuck in odd sizes and places after a monitor change or a window app. How to put them back to normal, app by app or all at once.
For one app: resize and place its window, then quit the app with ⌘ Q while the window is open. Most apps remember that position next time. For all windows at once, the steps below.
All windows
- On macOS Sequoia and later, click each window and press Fn ⌃ F to fill the screen, or Fn ⌃ C to centre it.
- Use Window, Move to bring windows back from a display you no longer have. See windows off screen.
- Log out and back in with Reopen windows when logging back in unticked, so apps start fresh.
After using a window manager
A window manager that quits cleanly should put windows back. ClutterFreeMac remembers where every window was before it arranged it; quitting or pausing (⌃ ⌥ P) gives every window back its old place, even after a forced quit.
One app keeps opening wrong
Hold ⇧ while opening it to skip restoring its old windows, then size the window again. See an app opening at the wrong size.
