Screenshot not working on your Mac? Six things to check

Command Shift 4 does nothing, or the files never appear. Check the shortcut, the save location, the floating thumbnail, and the app that blocks capture.

Why are my screenshots not saving to the desktop?

They are probably being saved, just somewhere else. Press ⌘ ⇧ 5, click Options, and look under Save to. If it says Clipboard, Documents, Mail or Preview, that is where they went. Choose Desktop to put them back.

Why does Command Shift 4 do nothing?

  1. Open System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, then Screenshots.
  2. Make sure Save picture of selected area as a file is ticked and shows ⇧ ⌘ 4.
  3. If another shortcut uses the same keys, a warning appears next to it. Change one of them.
  4. Click Restore Defaults at the bottom if the list looks changed.

Utilities that take screenshots of their own often take over these keys. If you installed one, check its settings.

Why is the screenshot black, or missing a window?

Some apps block capture of their windows, mostly video players showing protected films. The rest of the screen is captured, and that window comes out black. This is the app's choice and cannot be changed in settings.

Why does it take a few seconds for the file to appear?

The floating thumbnail. While it sits in the corner, the file is not written yet. Swipe the thumbnail away, or turn off Show Floating Thumbnail in the ⌘ ⇧ 5 Options, and files appear the moment you take them.

What if nothing works?

Restart the Mac, then try ⌘ ⇧ 3. If even the full screen shortcut fails, open Applications, Utilities, Screenshot and use its toolbar directly. If the app works but the keys do not, the problem is the shortcut, not the screenshot tool.

To choose a folder for them, see how to change the screenshot location. For other keys that stopped working, read keyboard shortcut conflicts.

Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1: the Save to and Show Floating Thumbnail options and the Screenshots shortcut names were read from the system's own labels.
