How to stop apps stealing focus while you type on a Mac

You are typing and another app jumps in front, taking your keystrokes. Why Mac apps grab focus, which ones do it most, and how to open apps without it.

Guide · Updated 22 October 2026

Why do apps steal focus on a Mac?

  • A slow app finished opening. You clicked it, started typing elsewhere, and it came forward when ready.
  • A login item started late. Apps that open at login can appear a minute after you start work.
  • An app showed a dialog: an update, a sign in, a permission request.
  • An app was opened by another, such as a link opening a browser.

Is there a setting to stop it?

No. macOS has no switch that stops apps coming forward. You can reduce how often it happens.

How do I open an app without it taking focus?

In Terminal, open -g -a "App Name" opens it in the background. The system describes -g as not bringing the application to the foreground. open -j opens it hidden.

How do I stop login items interrupting?

Remove apps you do not need at login: System Settings, General, Login Items & Extensions. See stop apps opening at startup. Apps that only need to run in the background often have their own option to start hidden.

How do I stop update prompts popping up?

Look in the app's settings for automatic updates, so it updates quietly instead of asking. Some apps let you turn off update checks altogether.

ClutterFreeMac handles the window side: when an app in the background opens a window, it joins the strip without taking your focus or scrolling the screen. See the features. Related: window opens behind other windows.

Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1: the open command lists -g as not bringing the application to the foreground and -j as launching it hidden.
