Why a window opens behind other windows on a Mac, and how to fix it
A new window or dialog that hides behind the one you are using. The usual causes on macOS, the quick ways to bring it forward, and how to stop losing it.
To bring it forward now: ⌘ Tab to the app, then choose Window, Bring All to Front. If it is still hidden, press ⌃ ↓ to see all of the app's windows and click the one you want.
Why it happens
- The app opened it while you were in another app. macOS will not let a background app jump in front of what you are typing in.
- It opened on another desktop or display. Check Mission Control (⌃ ↑).
- It is a dialog of another window, such as a save sheet attached to a window behind.
- It opened off screen. See bringing a window back on screen.
Stop losing windows
- Turn off Automatically rearrange Spaces, and consider fewer desktops.
- Keep apps that open lots of windows (browsers, chat) to one display.
Windows hide because they overlap. With ClutterFreeMac a new window takes its own column on the strip next to the one you are using, so it cannot open behind anything.
