Three finger swipe not working on your Mac? How to fix it
Swiping with three fingers does nothing, or does the wrong thing. The trackpad settings that decide it, the conflicts to check, and quick resets.
Open System Settings, Trackpad, More Gestures and check Swipe between full-screen applications and Mission Control. Each can use three or four fingers, or be off; the swipe only works with the number set there.
Common causes
- Three finger drag is on. It takes three fingers for dragging windows, so macOS moves its swipes to four fingers. Check System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, Trackpad Options. See three finger drag.
- Another app uses the same swipe. Gesture apps and window managers can claim three finger swipes.
- The gesture is off in More Gestures.
Quick resets
- Turn the gesture off and on again in Trackpad settings.
- For a Bluetooth trackpad, turn it off and on, or reconnect it.
- Restart the Mac; gesture settings sometimes need it after an update.
With ClutterFreeMac
ClutterFreeMac's strip listens for three or four finger swipes, whichever macOS is not using. Settings, Mac Setup checks for three finger drag and for macOS swipes on the same number of fingers, and offers the fix in one click.
