Universal Control vs Sidecar: which one do you want?
Both put an iPad next to your Mac. Sidecar makes it a second Mac screen; Universal Control lets one keyboard and pointer drive both. How they differ.
Sidecar turns the iPad into a second display for the Mac: Mac windows go on it. Universal Control keeps the iPad running iPad apps, and lets you move the Mac's pointer onto it and type into it with the Mac's keyboard.
| Sidecar | Universal Control | |
|---|---|---|
| The iPad shows | Mac windows | iPad apps |
| Keyboard and pointer | The Mac's | The Mac's, shared across both |
| Drag files between them | They are on one Mac | Yes, between the two devices |
| Apple Pencil | In Mac apps that support it | In iPad apps |
| How to start | Control Center, Screen Mirroring | Push the pointer past the edge of the Mac's screen |
Turning on Universal Control
System Settings, Displays, Advanced: turn on Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad. Both devices need the same Apple Account, with Bluetooth, Wi Fi and Handoff on.
Which to pick
Pick Sidecar for more room for Mac windows. Pick Universal Control when the iPad's own apps are the point and you just want one keyboard for both. For room on the Mac itself, see getting more screen space.
