How to turn off animations on a Mac with Reduce motion
Desktop swipes, Mission Control and full screen all slide and zoom. Reduce motion swaps them for quick fades. What it changes, plus a setting for new windows.
How do I reduce animations on a Mac?
- Open System Settings, Accessibility, Display.
- Turn on Reduce motion.
What does Reduce motion change?
- Switching desktops and full screen apps fades instead of sliding.
- Opening and leaving full screen, and Mission Control, use simpler transitions.
- Some apps also tone down their own effects when they see the setting on.
Nothing gets slower or loses a feature; only the motion between states changes.
How do I turn off other animations?
- Minimizing: choose Scale Effect instead of Genie in Desktop & Dock. See minimize a window.
- App opening bounce: turn off Animate opening applications in Desktop & Dock.
- New windows zooming open, in apps that use the system animation, with a hidden setting:
defaults write -g NSAutomaticWindowAnimationsEnabled -bool falseQuit and reopen apps for it to apply. To undo it, run the same line with true.
Is there anything for motion sickness specifically?
Accessibility, Display, also has Vehicle Motion Cues: dots near the edges of the screen that follow the movement of a car, which may help when reading while travelling.
Less visual noise in general: reduce transparency. Switching desktops less often: disable multiple desktops.
Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) running macOS 27.0.1: Reduce motion and Vehicle Motion Cues were read from System Settings, Accessibility, and the NSAutomaticWindowAnimationsEnabled setting is still present in the system.
