How to turn off window tiling on macOS Sequoia and later

Windows snapping to edges when you only meant to move them? The four tiling settings in macOS Sequoia, what each one does, and how to keep the ones you like.

Guide · Updated 13 October 2026

Open System Settings, Desktop & Dock, and under Windows turn off Drag windows to screen edges to tile. Windows stop snapping when you drag them near an edge.

The four tiling settings

SettingWhat it does
Drag windows to screen edges to tileDrop a window on an edge or corner to fill that half or quarter
Drag windows to menu bar to fill screenDrop a window on the menu bar to fill the screen
Hold ⌥ key while dragging windows to tileShows the tile outline as soon as you hold ⌥, even away from the edges
Tiled windows have marginsLeaves a gap between tiled windows and around the edges

A middle ground

Keep accidental snaps away by turning off the edge drag but keeping Hold ⌥ key while dragging: windows only tile when you hold ⌥. The keyboard shortcuts (Fn ⌃ and an arrow) and the green button menu keep working whatever you choose.

Using a window manager instead

If you use a window manager such as ClutterFreeMac, turn off the edge drag so macOS and the app do not both try to place a window you are dragging. ClutterFreeMac's own Settings, Mac Setup, lists the settings worth checking.
