How to pin tabs in Safari on a Mac, and what pinning does
Pin your mail, calendar and chat in Safari so they sit as small tabs at the left and survive closing windows. How to pin and unpin, and when it helps.
How do I pin a tab in Safari?
- Right click the tab and choose Pin Tab.
- Or drag the tab to the far left of the tab bar until it shrinks.
The tab becomes a small square with the site's icon, at the left of the tab bar.
What does pinning a tab do?
- It stays at the left, in the same place, so you can find it without reading tab titles.
- It shows in every Safari window, not only the one you pinned it in.
- Links to other websites open in a new tab, so the pinned site stays on its own page.
- It comes back when you quit and reopen Safari.
How do I unpin a tab in Safari?
Right click it and choose Unpin Tab, or drag it to the right, among the other tabs.
How do I close a pinned tab?
Right click it and choose Close Tab, or click it and press ⌘ W. Closing other tabs with Close Other Tabs leaves pinned ones alone.
For whole sets of tabs, see Safari Tab Groups. A site you keep open all day may be better as its own app: turn a website into an app.
Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) with Safari 27.0.1: Pin Tab and Unpin Tab were read from Safari's own labels.
