Guide · Updated 22 October 2026

How do I make a website into an app with Safari?

  1. Open the website in Safari.
  2. Choose File, Add to Dock.
  3. Edit the name if you like, and click Add.

The site appears in the Dock and in your Applications folder. It opens in its own window with a simple toolbar, shows up separately in ⌘ Tab, and stays open when you quit Safari. You may need to sign in once inside it.

How do I do it with Chrome?

Open the site, click the menu with three dots, and look under Cast, save and share for the option to install the page as an app. It opens in its own window, with its own Dock icon while it is running.

How do I remove a web app?

Quit it, then drag it from the Applications folder to the Trash. Safari web apps sit directly in Applications; Chrome's are in a folder named Chrome Apps inside it.

Which sites work best as apps?

Ones you keep open all day and switch to often: mail, calendar, chat, a project board, a music player. Sites you visit once in a while are better as bookmarks.

With ClutterFreeMac, each web app gets its own column on the strip like any other app, and a per app rule can give it a fixed place at the end. See the features. Fewer tabs: Safari pinned tabs.

Checked on 22 October 2026 on a MacBook Air (M1) with Safari 27.0.1: Add to Dock was read from Safari's own labels.
